One man is dead after a shooting at a Las Vegas, NV apartment complex Tuesday afternoon, March 26, 2024.
As reported by ReviewJournal.com, “[a]t about 4 p.m., Las Vegas police were called to the Venicia Apartments in the 3600 block of South Fort Apache Road near West Twain Avenue.”
Fox5Vegas.com is reporting, “[a]s officers were en route to the scene, they were advised that one victim had been shot and was near the entrance inside a white van. Police found the victim, a man believed to be in his 40s, and began to provide medical aid until medical personnel arrived on the scene. The victim was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.”
According to 8NewsNow.com, “[t]he Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s preliminary investigation indicated that the female suspect was inside the complex checking car doors to see if they were unlocked, police said. Several people notified the apartment leasing manager who then asked maintenance workers to go and search for the reported suspect and get them off the property. While the suspect was being located, two men inside a carpet cleaning company van were parked at the complex conducting a cleaning service. Police then stated that the female suspect quickly approached the van and pulled out her gun and shot the driver of the van.”
The ReviewJournal.com reports that the victim’s brother indicates that the victim was “from El Salvador.”
8NewesNow.com is reporting, “The Clark County coroner’s office identified the shooting victim Wednesday as Raul Cardoza, 41.”
The investigation is ongoing.
IS JUSTICE AVAILABLE? OUR LEGAL TAKE
Residents and guests of apartment complexes have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The level of security provided at the complex is of significance, and is a relevant consideration when analyzing whether this shooting may have been prevented. The following questions are also important in assessing whether this incident may have been avoided:
- Have prior incidents of violence been reported on or near the property?
- Was the property owner or manager aware of any suspicious activity prior to the shooting?
- Were any security personnel at the property?
- Were security measures added after any prior incidents?
- What protocol was in place to deter crime and protect the victims at the time of the shooting?
- Have authorities been to the property on prior occasions?
Property owners are generally required to protect against foreseeable harm to anyone and everyone legally on the premises. Should the investigation into this incident reveal facts that establish that the complex owner or management lacked adequate security to protect its residents and visitors, the family of Raul Cardoza may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims and substantial compensation for their loss.
The Murray Law Firm has extensive and successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, and suggests that an immediate, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed so as to limit evidence from being altered, damaged or destroyed.
