Did a security failure contribute to this Gastonia apartment home invasion?
Local News
A violent home invasion at the Garden Villas apartment complex reportedly left a mother injured and her child terrified Tuesday morning, February 6, 2018.
According to WBTV 3 News, a Gastonia mother “awoke to the sound of gunshots” inside her “Garden Villas” apartment home. The intruder was apparently able “to reach through her shot-out window to unlock her door.” The quick-thinking victim locked herself in a bedroom and dialed 911 as the suspect opened fire, striking her in the back.
Police have not yet identified a suspect, per WNCN reports, leaving both the victim and her daughter in fear. The victim told media her “daughter is traumatized for life” and they are now moving.

Our Legal Take
Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this shooting may have been prevented.
- Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property?
- How did the intruder gain entry to the property? What access controls and security measures, such as gated-entry, surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place to protect residents at the time of the shooting?
Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner and management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victim may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for her injuries.
Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
