Could the tragic death of this young Houston boy have been prevented?
Local News
The Houston community is still seeking answers in the Villa Americana apartment shooting, which claimed the life of one boy and left two others injured December 28, 2017.
According to KPRC 2 News, three boys, 13, 14 and 17, were standing in a common area of the “Villa Americana Apartments…when they were ambushed by three people.” All three victims suffered gunshot wounds in the attack. Tragically, the youngest succumbed to fatal injuries. KHOU 11 reports, the children “don’t appear to have any history that would get them in this type of situation.” It appears they were “innocent victims.”
The complex has an apparent history of criminal activity. The KPRC 2 investigation reveals “60 calls” to police “in just two months.”

Our Legal Take
Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.
- What additional security measures, such as gated-entry, surveillance cameras, bright lighting, and security patrols, were implemented by the apartment complex owner following media reports of prior criminal activity on property?
Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner and management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the victim’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death. Additionally, the other young victims of this attack may also pursue legal claims for their injuries.
Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
